Welded or woven options.
Manufactured from either welded mesh or woven wire, Gabion boxes and mattresses are filled with stone to provide immediate protection. Welded mesh gabions typically hold their shape better as they are made from heavier mesh with smaller openings. This allows for faster installation and filling as well as a more uniform appearance. Local stone or aggregate can be used for filling as long as it is hard and durable. If not readily available, a local quarry will be able to supply this easily in the UK.
Simple, all-weather installation.
Unlike more traditional methods of reinforcement, gabion baskets form a flexible, porous structure ensuring the wall remains structurally sound. They can be installed in all weathers and are delivered flat packed for simple assembly on site with no specialist skills required. A Geotextile cloth can be used to prevent the passing of materials from behind the wall as required.
Suitable for vegetation.
Gabion baskets are a greener solution too. Vegetation can grow through the baskets allowing for a more natural appearance that fits in with the local environment.
